Ghrieb Inaugurates Brake Pad Plant as Algeria Expands Domestic Automotive Manufacturing
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb inaugurated a new brake pad manufacturing facility in Reghaïa on presidential instructions, marking another step in Algeria’s strategy to transform recovered industrial assets into productive investments while reducing import dependence and strengthening the country’s automotive supply chain.

ALGIERS — Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on Wednesday inaugurated a new manufacturing facility for brake pads and related components in the industrial zone of Reghaïa, underscoring Algeria’s drive to revitalise recovered industrial assets and expand domestic manufacturing capacity.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the inauguration forms part of the government’s strategy to reintegrate assets recovered through corruption-related judicial proceedings into the national economy by converting them into productive industrial projects capable of generating added value, creating employment and supporting domestic investment.
Ghrieb was accompanied during the inauguration by Interior, Local Assemblies and Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud, Industry Minister Yahia Bachir, Finance Minister Abdelkrim Bouzred, alongside senior government officials and representatives of the business community.
The new facility is operated by the Eastern Maintenance Company (SME), a subsidiary of the Algeria Industrial Cement Group (GICA). Authorities expect the project to strengthen national production capacity, satisfy part of domestic demand, reduce imports of automotive braking components and eventually expand into export markets.
The government said the project reflects its broader policy of reinforcing Algeria’s industrial base, enhancing domestic production capabilities and strengthening economic sovereignty through greater reliance on locally manufactured products and increased investment in high value-added sectors.
Specialising in the production of brake pads and associated components for passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks, the factory manufactures products in accordance with internationally recognised technical standards.
Production Capacity and Industrial Integration
According to a technical presentation delivered during the inauguration ceremony, the plant manufactures 153 different brake pad models, including 126 models for passenger vehicles and 27 for heavy commercial vehicles, in addition to specialised products for tractors and other industrial equipment.
The facility has an annual production capacity of approximately 1.5 million brake pads.
The project is expected to create more than 150 jobs, including 60 direct positions, while supplying both vehicle assembly plants and after-sales service networks across Algeria’s 58 provinces.
Authorities estimate the factory will initially satisfy between 30% and 40% of domestic demand, before progressively expanding production and developing export activities.
The manufacturing process has been designed around energy-efficiency principles throughout every production stage.
The integrated production chain begins with the preparation of raw materials according to strict quality standards before progressing through machining, heat treatment, surface treatment, finishing, packaging and final conditioning, ensuring that all products comply with the required technical specifications.
Industrial Partnerships to Strengthen Local Supply Chains
On the sidelines of the inauguration, Prime Minister Ghrieb also presided over the signing ceremony of two industrial cooperation agreements aimed at expanding Algeria’s mechanical subcontracting sector.
The first agreement was signed between the Eastern Maintenance Company (SME) and Stellantis El Djazaïr, while the second was concluded between SME and IDENET.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud, Industry Minister Yahia Bachir, Finance Minister Abdelkrim Bouzred, senior government officials and economic operators.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, both agreements form part of Algeria’s strategy to strengthen industrial partnerships, expand local subcontracting networks and reinforce the competitiveness and market position of domestically manufactured products.
The agreements are also expected to contribute to increasing local industrial integration within the automotive sector while supporting the broader development of Algeria’s manufacturing ecosystem.
