India Expands Cultural Footprint in Algeria Through Festival Celebrating Shared Friendship

ALGIERS — India and Algeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening people-to-people relations through cultural diplomacy following the successful staging of the India–Algeria Cultural Festival, held in Algiers on 25 July 2026.
The event, organised by the Embassy of India in Algeria, highlighted the rich cultural heritage of both countries while providing a platform for dialogue, artistic exchange and deeper public engagement beyond the traditional political and economic dimensions of bilateral relations.
More than 200 guests attended the festival, including members of the diplomatic corps, senior officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the media, Friends of India, academics, cultural figures and members of the Indian community residing in Algeria.
Celebrating Two Ancient Civilisations
Designed to showcase the diversity and historical depth of both nations, the festival opened with the rendition of “Vande Mataram,” one of India’s most celebrated patriotic songs, before offering visitors an extensive programme combining music, art, education, wellness and gastronomy.
The event featured a live performance by an Algerian musical ensemble, illustrating the organisers’ emphasis on cultural dialogue rather than unilateral cultural promotion.
Visitors also explored exhibitions of traditional Algerian handicrafts and cuisine, presented alongside displays introducing India’s own cultural traditions, creating an environment of mutual cultural appreciation.
Showcasing India’s Diversified Culture
A key component of the festival was the presentation of India’s cultural and economic initiatives through several thematic exhibitions.
Among the highlights was the One District One Product (ODOP) exhibition, which showcased India’s strategy of promoting unique regional products and supporting local artisans and small-scale industries. The initiative reflects New Delhi’s broader efforts to preserve traditional craftsmanship while enhancing export competitiveness.
The festival also featured exhibitions of Indian spices and Ayurvedic products, introducing visitors to India’s centuries-old traditions in natural wellness and holistic healthcare.
In parallel, the “Read India, Rise India” exhibition presented India’s educational achievements, literary heritage and knowledge-based development, highlighting the country’s emphasis on innovation, education and human capital.
Interactive activities formed a central part of the festival’s programme.
Participants attended a workshop dedicated to Madhubani painting, one of India’s oldest and most recognisable folk art traditions, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the techniques and symbolism associated with this distinctive artistic heritage.
The programme also included a Hindi language quiz, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with one of India’s official languages while encouraging greater cultural familiarity.
Traditional Indian attire was showcased through a sari draping demonstration, introducing participants to one of India’s most iconic garments and the cultural traditions associated with it.
Yoga as Cultural Diplomacy
The festival concluded with a Yoga session, reflecting India’s continued efforts to promote yoga as a universal practice for health and well-being.
Since the United Nations designated 21 June as the International Day of Yoga, India has increasingly integrated yoga into its public diplomacy worldwide, including in Algeria, where annual yoga celebrations and wellness activities have become regular features of the Embassy’s cultural outreach.
The cultural festival forms part of a broader framework of expanding India–Algeria cultural cooperation, which has witnessed growing momentum in recent years through cultural exchanges, educational initiatives, academic cooperation, language promotion and public diplomacy programmes.
Beyond strengthening diplomatic relations, such initiatives seek to foster direct interaction between the peoples of both countries, enhance mutual understanding and create new opportunities for collaboration in education, culture, tourism and the creative industries.
