Pope Leo XIV on His Stay in Algeria: “It Was a Blessed Visit”

By Dr. Hana Saada

“It was a blessed visit.” With these words, Pope Leo XIV reflected on his stay in Algeria. Speaking aboard the flight from Algiers to Yaoundé, the second stage of his African tour, the pontiff told accompanying journalists: “It is a sign of the kindness, generosity and respect that the Algerian people and government wished to show to the Holy See and to me personally.”

The Sovereign Pontiff spoke warmly of the Catholic Church in Algeria, describing it as “small,” yet “important.” He emphasized the respect shown by Algerians toward Christianity, despite being a Muslim-majority society deeply attached to its faith. In this regard, he highlighted the enduring place of Saint Augustine in the country’s historical consciousness. “Algerians deeply honour and respect the memory of Saint Augustine as one of the great sons of their land,” he stated.

Promoting Peaceful Coexistence

Reflecting on his visit to Annaba—formerly Hippone—the pontiff underscored its profound spiritual symbolism. He recalled that Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippone, “is a figure from the past who speaks to us of tradition and of the life of the Church in its early centuries, yet who remains immensely relevant today.”

The Pope also revisited a moment of interfaith communion at the Great Mosque of Algiers, where he met with its rector inside the main prayer hall. There, he sought to demonstrate that religions are not inherently divisive. “Even if we have different beliefs, different ways of praying and living, we can nonetheless live together in peace,” he affirmed. He added that promoting such an image is something “the world needs today,” urging continued collective efforts to embody this message throughout his apostolic journey.

The Lessons of a Visit

Beyond its immediate diplomatic and spiritual dimensions, the visit carried broader implications. It offered a tangible demonstration that Islam and Christianity are not inherently opposed, but can coexist within a shared framework of respect and mutual recognition—contrary to narratives advanced by extremist fringes on both sides.

Over the course of three days, the presence of Pope Leo XIV in Algiers and Annaba illustrated a willingness—both institutional and popular—to open a space for dialogue in a global climate often marked by polarization. The images of coexistence, from the papal mass attended by diverse faithful to the symbolic gestures at major religious sites, conveyed a powerful counterpoint to discourses of division.

At a time of heightened international tensions and resurging ideological confrontations, the visit also underscored Algeria’s historical positioning as a meeting point of civilizations and a land of peace. The pontiff’s repeated calls for justice, fraternity and dialogue resonated within this context, offering not merely rhetoric, but a lived example of interreligious harmony.

Ultimately, the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Algeria stands as both a diplomatic milestone and a moral statement. It reaffirmed that coexistence is not an abstract ideal, but a practical reality when supported by political will, cultural awareness and spiritual openness.

From the highest levels of state authority to everyday citizens, Algeria projected an image of tolerance and respect toward other faiths—an image that challenges entrenched stereotypes and invites a reassessment of prevailing narratives. In doing so, the visit did not merely conclude with the departure of a pontiff; it left behind a compelling testament to the possibility of dialogue in an increasingly fragmented world.
