ALGIERS — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune held closed-door talks on Monday with Angolan President João Lourenço during the latter’s state visit to Algeria, in a diplomatic engagement highlighting deepening political coordination between two influential African states.

The tête-à-tête meeting at the Presidency headquarters in Algiers was later expanded to include senior delegations from both countries, amid efforts to reinforce bilateral cooperation and continental consultation on key African issues.

Earlier, Tebboune accorded Lourenço a full state welcome ceremony at the Presidency Palace, where the Angolan leader was greeted with military honours by units of Algeria’s Republican Guard following the playing of the two national anthems. The two presidents later posed for an official photograph before national and international media.

Upon arrival at Algiers International Airport, Lourenço was personally received by Tebboune. The ceremony included a review of detachments from Algeria’s armed forces as a 21-gun salute was fired in honour of the Angolan president.

During the reception, Tebboune greeted members of the Angolan delegation, while Lourenço exchanged greetings with senior Algerian state officials attending the ceremony.

As part of the visit, the Angolan president also paid tribute to Algeria’s liberation war during a visit to the Maqam Echahid, where he observed a minute of silence and laid a wreath in memory of the martyrs of Algeria’s war of independence.

Lourenço later toured the National Museum of the Moudjahid, where he was briefed on major historical milestones chronicling Algeria’s anti-colonial resistance, national movement and armed liberation struggle.
