U.S.–Algeria Relations Broaden Beyond Security to Economic, Tourism and Strategic Cooperation
BY Dr. Hana Saada
A visit by senior U.S. officials to Algiers signals a broadening of bilateral ties beyond security toward a more diversified agenda spanning trade, investment and tourism.
On his first official trip, Christopher Landau highlighted Algeria’s “remarkable” tourism assets, describing Algiers as a “captivating” Mediterranean capital shaped by a blend of Moorish and European architecture. His public remarks, following visits to sites including the Dey’s Palace and the historic central post office, point to a growing U.S. appreciation of Algeria’s underexploited soft-power potential.

The visit carried substantive diplomatic weight. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the delegation for talks covering economic cooperation, trade and regional issues, reflecting a shared interest in deepening a relationship long established but commercially underdeveloped. Both sides signalled scope to expand investment flows and strengthen business linkages.
Security remains a central pillar, but no longer the sole focus. Dagvin Anderson, head of United States Africa Command, reaffirmed Algeria’s role as a key counterterrorism partner, while stressing that lasting stability depends on a broader framework combining economic development, infrastructure and social cohesion.
Officials framed the relationship as entering a more consequential phase—rooted in ties dating back to the late 18th century, but increasingly oriented toward energy, trade, tourism and institutional cooperation, alongside coordination on Sahel stability.
The timing coincides with a shift in Algeria’s international profile. Outlets such as The Washington Post and USA Herald have recently identified the country among emerging tourism destinations for 2026, citing its cultural depth and geographic diversity.
Taken together, the visit points to a more balanced, transactional partnership—one that aligns strategic coordination with economic opportunity and positions Algeria as both a regional anchor and an increasingly credible market.
