African Envoys Praise Algeria’s Expanding Trade Footprint Across the Continent
BY Dr. Hana Saada
African ambassadors have highlighted the growing momentum of trade between Algeria and African countries, citing sustained political commitment and a strategic push to diversify the economy beyond hydrocarbons.
The remarks were made on the sidelines of the Exhibition of Algerian Goods and Services for Export, currently underway in Tindouf, where diplomats said Algeria’s recent economic initiatives—including trade fairs and intensified bilateral engagements—have opened new channels for business operators and strengthened the presence of Algerian products in African markets, particularly in West Africa.
They underlined that improved infrastructure and streamlined export procedures are key to deepening African economic integration and building partnerships based on mutual benefit.
The Mauritanian ambassador to Algeria, Sidi Mohamed Abdellah, described Tindouf as a strategic gateway for Algeria towards West African markets, noting the exhibition’s growing role as a platform for promoting Algerian goods to a consumer base exceeding 150 million people.
He said trade between Algeria and Mauritania has risen sharply to around $500 million, with further expansion expected following completion of the Tindouf–Zouérate road project, which is set to accelerate cross-border flows.
He also pointed to advanced discussions on a preferential trade arrangement covering a list of goods exempt from customs duties, aimed at further liberalising exchanges and supporting border-region development.
The ambassador added that Algerian products enjoy strong demand in Mauritania and are increasingly re-exported across West Africa, supported by Algeria’s annual trade exhibition in Nouakchott, which has drawn hundreds of Algerian companies in recent editions.
The Senegalese ambassador, Mbaba Kora Ndiaye, meanwhile pointed to the establishment of an Algerian–Senegalese bank as evidence of efforts to facilitate investment and trade, describing it as a tool to support both bilateral economic activity and wider African growth within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The Sierra Leonean ambassador, Alhaji Brima Elvis Koroma, said Algeria’s export drive reflects a broader regional integration dynamic, noting rising interest among African operators in accessing markets through Mauritania as a logistical gateway. He also praised Algeria’s positions on African solidarity and its role in strengthening continental cooperation.
The First Secretary of the Guinean embassy, Mohamed Abderrahmane, stressed the need to expand intra-African trade and improve coordination among African economies to unlock the continent’s resource potential under the AfCFTA framework.
The event, held under the slogan “Tindouf, a Gateway for Exports to West Africa,” brings together 104 Algerian production and service companies alongside 45 craft enterprises, showcasing national capacities and promoting the “Made in Algeria” label across regional markets.
