Algerian Gendarmerie Dismantles Livestock Theft Network in Blida
By Dr. Hana Saada
The Algerian National Gendarmerie has dismantled a criminal network involved in the theft of imported sheep in Blida, in a swift operation carried out by the regional brigade of Ben Chaâbane, according to security sources.
The operation falls within intensified monitoring of import, aggregation, quarantine and sale procedures for foreign-breed livestock intended for distribution to citizens ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026.
Authorities said the case was triggered by intelligence indicating that an individual had stolen sheep of Romanian origin placed under veterinary quarantine at a farm in the commune of Ben Khelil, using a transport truck.
Following surveillance and tracking operations, gendarmes intercepted a truck carrying two suspects and eight sheep of the same breed.
Subsequent judicial coordination led to the arrest of five suspects, aged between 24 and 63, and the recovery of 49 stolen sheep. Authorities also seized the transport vehicle used in the operation and approximately 1.81 million dinars in proceeds from the sale of stolen livestock.
The suspects are expected to be presented before the public prosecutor at the tribunal of Boufarik upon completion of the investigation.
