Algeria, Azerbaijan Move to Deepen Energy Partnership Across Hydrocarbons, Renewables and Market Coordination
Algeria and Azerbaijan have agreed to strengthen their energy cooperation, following high-level meetings in Algiers on Sunday focused on hydrocarbons, renewables and coordination in global energy markets.
State Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab received an Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation led by Shahin Ismayilov, head of the Azerbaijan–Algeria parliamentary friendship group and chairman of the National Assembly’s Youth Committee, during a working visit to Algeria, according to a ministry statement.
Talks, held at the ministry headquarters in the presence of Algeria’s parliamentary friendship group president Abdelbasset Gharbi and senior officials, focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in hydrocarbons, described by both sides as friendly and well established. Priority areas included oil services, field development, transport of hydrocarbons, refining and petrochemicals, as well as broader oil and gas industry activities.
Both sides also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in expertise sharing, training and professional development in the oil and gas sector, aimed at improving human capacity and operational performance across the value chain.
Investment and partnership opportunities were also reviewed, particularly between Sonatrach and Azerbaijan’s state oil and gas company SOCAR, covering multiple stages of the hydrocarbons value chain. Discussions included mechanisms for enhancing technical and technological cooperation and exchanging expertise.
The meeting recalled the memorandum of understanding signed in Algeria in November 2022 and reviewed ways to activate its implementation, with the aim of expanding bilateral cooperation and reinforcing the strategic energy partnership.
The two sides also exchanged views on developments in global oil and gas markets, underlining the importance of continued coordination within OPEC+ and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum to support market stability and secure energy supplies.
Separately, Shahin Ismayilov was received by Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy Mourad Adjal, in the presence of senior officials, where both sides discussed broader energy cooperation, including renewable energy.
The Azerbaijani delegation highlighted similarities between both countries across the energy value chain, including production, transport, distribution and consumption patterns, and expressed interest in expanding cooperation into renewable energy.
Adjal outlined Algeria’s major energy projects and diversification strategy, reaffirming the country’s position as a reliable partner in ensuring energy security at continental and international levels. He also highlighted progress in renewable energy, including a 15,000 MW generation programme under implementation, alongside developments in solar, wind and green hydrogen projects, as well as efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Both sides agreed to organise future expert-level meetings to explore additional cooperation opportunities and broaden the partnership in energy and renewable energy sectors.
