Algeria–Bosnia Relations Trace Deep Historical Roots as Diplomatic and Institutional Ties Expand
The historical and cultural links between Algeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina date back to earlier periods, reflecting successive phases of interaction that have periodically drawn the two countries closer. One notable element of this shared history is the persistence in Algeria of the family name “Bošnjak,” etymologically linked to Bosnian origins, underscoring longstanding cultural interconnections.
In a more recent historical phase, Algerian–Yugoslav relations contributed to strengthening contacts with Bosnia and Herzegovina, laying early foundations for later bilateral engagement following Bosnian independence.
Algeria was among the first countries to recognise the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina on 24 April 1992. Diplomatic relations were formally established on 20 January 1993.
Bilateral engagement subsequently developed through a series of high-level visits and institutional exchanges. On 19–20 December 2010, then Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci visited Sarajevo in the first official visit of an Algerian foreign minister to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He held talks with his counterpart Sven Alkalaj and senior officials, culminating in the signing of an agreement exempting holders of diplomatic passports from visa requirements. The visit concluded with a joint press conference.
Between 27 and 29 May 2018, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak visited Algeria at the invitation of Abdelkader Messahel. Talks focused on revitalising bilateral cooperation. The Bosnian minister was received by several senior Algerian officials, including the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Industry and Mines, and the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Both sides expressed their intention to elevate economic and trade relations in line with existing potential.
During discussions with parliamentary officials, the establishment of a joint parliamentary friendship committee was also proposed as a mechanism to strengthen institutional cooperation and legislative exchange.
On 6 May 2021, then Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum announced the imminent opening of Algerian and Bosnian embassies in Sarajevo and Algiers following a telephone conversation with his counterpart Bisera Turković. The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and international developments.
On 9 May 2022, Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra received Bisera Turković during an official visit to Algiers. Both parties welcomed the decision to enhance diplomatic representation through the establishment of embassies in their respective capitals. Turković was also received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during her visit.
On 14 June 2022, Ambassador Toufik Milat presented his credentials to the Bosnian Presidency, becoming Algeria’s first resident ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On 10 September 2022, Algeria formally inaugurated its embassy in Sarajevo in a ceremony led by Ambassador Toufik Milat, attended by members of the Algerian community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The sequence of diplomatic milestones reflects a gradual institutional consolidation of relations anchored in political recognition, expanded representation and structured bilateral engagement.
