Algeria, Chad Sign 28 Deals to Launch Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
By Dr. Hana Saada
The state visit of Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno to Algeria, at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, from 22 to 24 April 2026, wrapped up with the establishment of a new framework for enhanced strategic cooperation between the two countries.
According to a presidency statement, the two leaders oversaw the signing of 28 agreements and memoranda of understanding, developed under the fourth session of the Algeria–Chad Joint Commission. The accords formalise a renewed legal and operational framework for bilateral relations dating back to 1975.
On the economic front, both sides called for the translation of commitments into concrete projects, highlighting the importance of activating a joint business council and promoting partnerships between enterprises in sectors including energy, mining, renewable energy and construction materials, with an emphasis on skills transfer and resource development.
The leaders welcomed recent progress in infrastructure and connectivity, notably the launch of a direct air route between Algiers and N’Djamena, alongside strategic projects such as the trans-Saharan highway and fibre-optic networks, seen as key drivers of regional integration and digital transformation.
In security and defence, the two sides stressed the need for closer coordination to address shared regional threats, including terrorism, violent extremism and cross-border organised crime. They agreed to strengthen operational cooperation between their respective security and military institutions, particularly in border management, intelligence sharing and capacity building, while reaffirming respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs.
On regional and international issues, the two presidents reiterated support for political solutions to crises in Libya, the Sahel and Sudan, framing an “African response to African challenges” as the only viable approach to stability, and warning against separating security from development.
The joint statement recorded alignment on key international questions, including support for a UN-based political settlement in Western Sahara, and reaffirmed backing for Palestinian self-determination, while expressing concern over developments in the Middle East.
The visit concluded with an agreement to institutionalise high-level consultations to ensure implementation of the accords. President Déby extended an official invitation to President Tebboune to visit N’Djamena, to be scheduled through diplomatic channels.
