Sansal Marginalised in France as Backlash Intensifies Ahead of Belgian Academy Role
By Dr. Hana Saada
French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has signalled a break with France, saying he intends to leave the country following mounting criticism since his release and pardon in November 2025.
In comments to TF1, the 81-year-old said he has been facing sustained public and media backlash and expressed exhaustion with the controversy surrounding him. “France is over for me,” he stated, adding that he plans to leave within months and will not engage further in what he described as futile disputes.
The remarks come as he prepares for an anticipated induction into the Royal Academy of Belgium, amid ongoing political and media debate over his recent positions.
No official response has been issued by French authorities or the academy.
