Algeria Consumer Body Warns of Food Poisoning Risk Over Strawberry Display Practices
BY Dr. Hana Saada

The Algerian Organization for Consumer Protection and Guidance has warned of the growing practice of selling strawberries in sealed plastic containers in markets, instead of open crates, particularly amid rising temperatures.

The organisation said this method of display and storage, without adequate ventilation, can trap moisture and increase heat inside the packaging, creating conditions conducive to mould growth and bacterial proliferation, thereby accelerating fruit spoilage and raising the risk of foodborne illness.

It stressed that strawberries are highly perishable and require specific storage conditions, including proper ventilation and low temperatures, urging consumers to avoid purchasing fruit kept in non-hygienic conditions or in tightly sealed containers, especially when exposed to direct sunlight or high heat.

The body also advised consumers to refrigerate strawberries promptly after purchase, wash them thoroughly before consumption, and ensure they show no signs of deterioration or mould.

It further called on traders to comply with proper storage and display standards to protect public health and reduce risks associated with unsafe food handling.
