Chad’s President Performs Friday Prayers at Djamaa El-Djazair During Official Visit to Algeria

Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, performed Friday prayers at Djamaa El-Djazair during his official visit to Algeria, underscoring the symbolic and diplomatic dimensions of his stay.
Upon arrival, he was received by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and the rector of Djamaa El-Djazair, Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, in a visit that formed part of a broader programme aimed at deepening bilateral ties.
Conceived as a fusion of modern engineering and classical Islamic aesthetics, the mosque reflects a deliberate synthesis of architectural traditions. Its design blends Andalusian influences with contemporary forms, combining geometric precision, intricate craftsmanship and monumental scale. Materials such as wood, marble and alabaster are used with restraint, while six kilometres of Quranic calligraphy are embedded across its surfaces. The turquoise prayer mats complete an interior that is both expansive and contemplative.
The scale of the complex reinforces its ambition. Spanning nearly 28 hectares, the site includes a prayer hall exceeding two hectares in area, with capacity for up to 120,000 worshippers. Structured as a vast cube rising approximately 22.5 metres and crowned by a dome reaching 70 metres, the hall integrates core religious elements—including the qibla wall, mihrab and minbar—within a coherent modern spatial framework.
Its minaret, rising to around 265 metres, stands as the tallest in the world, redefining the skyline of Algiers. Equipped with elevators and observation levels, it combines the vertical logic of contemporary high-rise structures with the symbolic language of Islamic architecture.
Beyond its architectural presence, Djamaa El-Djazair functions as a comprehensive religious, intellectual and cultural complex. It houses a Quranic school, a cultural centre, a library with capacity for up to one million volumes, lecture halls, museums and research centres dedicated to Algerian history and Islamic civilisation. Facilities for advanced scholarship, including research spaces and accommodation for doctoral students, position the site as both a place of worship and a centre of knowledge production.
The surrounding infrastructure—including esplanades, administrative buildings, green spaces and integrated services—further anchors the mosque within the urban fabric, linking religious practice with civic life. Advanced engineering features, including anti-seismic systems, reflect a forward-looking approach to construction.
