Algeria–Chad Ties Deepen as Tebboune Accepts Déby Invitation Following Wave of Agreements
By Dr. Hana Saada
Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has concluded a three-day official visit to Algeria marked by the signing of a wide-ranging set of agreements and memoranda of understanding, as both countries move to elevate ties into a broader strategic partnership.
The Chadian leader was seen off at Algiers International Airport by the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, at the end of a visit officials described as a decisive step in consolidating bilateral relations.
During the visit, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune held talks with his counterpart, extended to members of both delegations, before the two leaders jointly presided over the signing ceremony at the presidency. The agreements span public works, communication, youth, animal health, the pharmaceutical industry, air transport services, higher education and scientific research, industry and trade, alongside a framework agreement for the construction of a refinery.
Both sides also signed a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, as well as an accord establishing structured political and diplomatic consultations.
Speaking to the press, President Tebboune said the two countries had taken “an important step towards building an integrated strategic partnership”, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to stand alongside Chad and to help shape “a successful African model of intra-African cooperation”.
He added that the visit reflects a shared political will to build on momentum generated since the Chadian president’s previous visit, and to inject new impetus into bilateral cooperation. The two sides also agreed to activate institutional mechanisms, including convening the fourth session of their joint commission, and to update the legal framework governing relations through the signing of nearly 30 agreements and memorandums.
For his part, President Déby said the visit signals “a clear political will” to move from traditional ties to “a new-generation strategic partnership”, underpinned by shared history and common political vision.
In a joint communiqué, President Tebboune accepted an invitation to undertake an official visit to Chad, with dates to be set through diplomatic channels—extending a momentum both sides now aim to convert into durable strategic alignment.
