Algeria, EU Move to Deepen Energy Cooperation in Oil, Gas and Energy Transition Talks
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algerian Minister of State for Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab held talks on Monday in Algiers with EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica, focusing on expanding cooperation in oil, gas and energy transition, the ministry said.
The meeting, attended by senior ministry officials and the EU ambassador to Algeria, reviewed the state and prospects of Algeria–EU energy relations within the framework of their strategic dialogue, particularly in hydrocarbons.
Both sides underlined the central role of energy cooperation in ensuring economic stability and securing supply chains, with emphasis on boosting investment in exploration, production and downstream infrastructure, including refining and petrochemicals.
Mr Arkab highlighted structural reforms in Algeria’s hydrocarbons sector, notably a revised legal framework designed to improve investment attractiveness and flexibility. He reaffirmed Algeria’s position as a reliable gas supplier and its commitment to contractual obligations with partners.
Discussions also covered ongoing cooperation in natural gas supply to Europe, development of production fields, and prospects for extending collaboration into low-carbon technologies, including emissions reduction, carbon capture and storage, and broader environmental transition projects.
The Algerian side invited European companies to strengthen their presence in the local market, citing improved investment conditions supported by regulatory reforms aimed at transparency and procedural simplification.
Ms Šuica presented the EU’s new “Mediterranean Pact”, launched in October 2025, which seeks to renew Euro-Mediterranean cooperation through a broader framework focused on stability, development and energy transition.
She expressed satisfaction with the level of strategic dialogue with Algeria, praised its role as a reliable energy partner for Europe, and noted growing interest from European firms in the Algerian market, while calling for expanded cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
