Algeria Orders Water Supply Safeguards Ahead of Summer Peak and Eid Demand Surge

By Dr. Hana Saada

Algerian Minister of Water Resources Lounes Bouzegza on Monday chaired a videoconference meeting with regional water directors from 16 provinces, alongside senior officials from the national water and sanitation agencies, to assess preparedness for peak seasonal demand during the summer period and Eid al-Adha.

The meeting reviewed operational measures taken at central and local levels to ensure continuity of drinking water supply nationwide, in line with presidential directives aimed at guaranteeing stable access to potable water across all regions.

Following presentations by regional directors, Bouzegza issued instructions to strengthen emergency planning and service continuity, including the preparation of contingency programmes, optimal use of available infrastructure, and ensuring full operational readiness of wells, pumping stations and related facilities.

He also called for more precise local diagnostics to identify constraints and implement targeted solutions, alongside stricter water demand management and resource optimisation. The minister stressed the need to address citizen complaints promptly and reinforce communication channels with users.

Bouzegza further ordered immediate intervention in case of supply disruptions, intensified efforts to combat illegal connections and water losses, accelerated repair of leaks, and structured rehabilitation of distribution networks, as well as tighter control over distribution schedules to ensure stability.

He underscored the importance of maintaining continuous staffing across all facilities, including weekends and holidays, to ensure rapid response to breakdowns and technical incidents.

The minister concluded by urging greater coordination among sector institutions and stronger field-level engagement to improve public service delivery.

Additional coordination meetings will be held with other provinces in the coming period to extend monitoring and ensure nationwide readiness ahead of peak consumption periods.
