Algerian Communications Minister Zoheir Bouamama on Monday praised the “significant advances” in the country’s national press, highlighting its role in public awareness, information delivery and social cohesion.
Speaking in Algiers at a World Press Freedom Day ceremony held under the presidency of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Bouamama said efforts were under way to upgrade Algeria’s media system so it can more effectively support national objectives in public awareness, communication and the consolidation of stability and development.
He said the head of state continues to support journalists and media professionals engaged in promoting national achievements and countering disinformation through professional reporting across print, broadcast and visual formats in defence of national interests.
Bouamama stressed the “inseparable link” between press freedom as a constitutional right and professional ethics, arguing that safeguards are necessary to protect journalists from abuses while ensuring respect for legal frameworks, national principles and security requirements.
He described press freedom as a pillar of democratic life and institutional stability, adding that ongoing reforms aim to consolidate a media environment that is both free and professionally regulated.
He also outlined efforts to complete the legal and regulatory framework governing the sector, including legislation on journalism and related professions, alongside the establishment of regulatory bodies and a professional ethics council.
Bouamama highlighted training programmes to strengthen journalists’ skills, including adaptation to artificial intelligence tools, and work on a revised government communication strategy intended to be more proactive and digitally aligned.
He said the objective is to deepen cooperation between state institutions and national media, ensuring citizens’ right to reliable information while positioning the press as a key instrument of public awareness.
Paying tribute to journalists killed during Algeria’s “years of terror,” Bouamama commended the national press for its role alongside state institutions during periods of violence, and honoured what he called its contribution to resisting extremism and destabilisation.
