President Tebboune Marks Press Freedom Day as Algeria Pushes Media Reform Agenda
By Dr. Hana Saada
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday chaired a ceremony at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers marking World Press Freedom Day, in the presence of senior state officials, government members, heads of national institutions, media executives, journalists and accredited foreign correspondents.
In remarks delivered at the event, Communications Minister Zoheir Bouamama praised the contribution of the national press to accompanying Algeria’s development drive, reinforcing public awareness, informing opinion and supporting state stability under presidential leadership.
He highlighted continued government backing for journalists, including efforts to promote national achievements domestically and internationally, while countering disinformation campaigns through professional reporting across print, broadcast and audiovisual media.
Bouamama stressed the link between press freedom as a constitutional right and professional ethics, arguing that ongoing reforms seek to balance freedom of expression with regulatory frameworks, national principles and security imperatives.
He outlined reforms under way to restructure the media sector, including legislative updates, the establishment of regulatory bodies and the forthcoming installation of a press ethics and deontology council. He also pointed to efforts to modernise government communication and strengthen cooperation between state institutions and national media.
Parallel to the official ceremony, media professionals reflected on the sector’s evolution. El Moudjahid CEO Brahim Takheroubt said reforms already undertaken were “tangible”, but argued that long-term consolidation depends on sustained investment in journalist training, describing skills development as the profession’s “main safeguard” against misinformation and external influence.
Journalist Tahar Kaïdi underlined press freedom as a prerequisite for pluralism and democratic expression, while calling for improved professional conditions to ensure editorial independence and quality reporting.
SNJ secretary-general and El Soir d’Algérie editor-in-chief Kamel Amarni welcomed institutional support for the sector but urged the establishment of a dedicated legal status for journalists, arguing that social and professional protections are essential to safeguard editorial independence.
