Algeria, Italy Move to Seal Environmental Cooperation Deal as Sustainability Agenda Deepens

Algeria and Italy are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation on environmental protection and sustainable development, following talks in Algiers on Monday between Environment and Quality of Life Minister Kaouter Krikou and an Italian parliamentary friendship delegation led by Andrea Mascaretti.

The meeting, attended by Kamel Laouisset, head of the Algeria–Italy parliamentary friendship group, reviewed prospects for expanding cooperation across climate policy, circular economy frameworks, biodiversity protection and natural resource management, alongside alignment with international environmental standards.

Discussions also covered Algeria’s flagship environmental programmes, including large-scale seawater desalination projects launched under presidential directives, and the rehabilitation of the Green Dam, now being reoriented through an economic model integrating youth employment, micro-enterprises and local communities.

Ms Krikou said the talks provided an opportunity to present Algeria’s circular economy strategy and broader efforts to modernise environmental governance. She noted that the Italian delegation expressed strong interest in structured cooperation between both countries’ environmental sectors, with both sides confirming that a formal agreement will be concluded shortly.

Mr Mascaretti said the visit was intended to reinforce long-standing bilateral ties, and highlighted Algeria’s “strong state commitment” to environmental protection and quality-of-life initiatives. He added that the discussions offered detailed insight into Algeria’s ongoing environmental projects and confirmed continued cooperation across sustainability-related fields.

The planned accord is expected to formalise exchanges of expertise and strengthen institutional coordination between Algiers and Rome in environmental policy and sustainable development.
