Algeria, EU seek to recalibrate ties under new Mediterranean framework
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria’s foreign minister Ahmed Attaf held talks on Monday with European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica, focusing on recalibrating ties with the European Union and aligning cooperation with the bloc’s new Mediterranean framework.
The meeting in Algiers reviewed the full scope of the Algeria–EU partnership and explored ways to inject greater momentum, balance and strategic coherence, in line with the objectives of the “Pact for the Mediterranean” launched in November 2025.
Discussions centred on priority areas including investment, trade, energy, the green economy, higher education and mobility, reflecting a shared interest in broadening the partnership beyond its traditional pillars.
Both sides also exchanged views on current development and security challenges across the Mediterranean basin, underlining the need for closer coordination to ensure effective and sustainable responses.
The talks form part of ongoing efforts to reposition Algeria–EU relations within a more structured and forward-looking framework, as both parties seek to adapt cooperation to shifting regional dynamics.
