Algeria Reaffirms Firm Position on Mali Crisis, Urges National Unity and Rejection of Terrorism

Algeria’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, has reiterated the country’s “clear and consistent” position regarding recent developments in Mali.
In a joint press briefing following his reception of the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, Attaf said: “I would like to address the serious developments taking place in our Sahel region of belonging, and in Mali in particular, to reaffirm Algeria’s clear and consistent position.”
He stated that Algeria’s position is based on support for the unity of Mali in terms of territory, population and institutions, as well as a categorical rejection of terrorism in all its forms, which he said cannot be justified or tolerated under any circumstances, “whatever the motives or causes,” recalling Algeria’s own experience with the phenomenon.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening national cohesion in Mali, calling it “the best deterrent to terrorism” and “the shield that can truly be relied upon to confront this scourge with the required effectiveness.”
