Algerian army reports surrender of terrorist, dismantling of support network and nationwide security operations
BY Dr. Hana Saada
The Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) said on Wednesday that a terrorist surrendered to military authorities in In Guezzam, while nine members of support networks for terrorist groups were arrested in separate operations carried out across the country between 22 and 28 April.
In its weekly operational update, the ANP said the results “reflect a high level of professionalism, vigilance and permanent readiness” of its units nationwide.
The surrender involved an individual identified as H.A., known as “Maazou”, who handed himself over to authorities with a Kalashnikov rifle, ammunition and other equipment.
In parallel counterterrorism operations, security forces arrested nine individuals accused of supporting terrorist groups across different regions.
On organised crime, the ANP said joint army and security units detained 44 suspected drug traffickers and foiled attempts to smuggle 235 kg of cannabis resin from Morocco, alongside seizures of 8.14 kg of cocaine and 1,654,908 psychotropic tablets.
In the south, anti-smuggling and anti-illicit mining operations in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Salah and In Guezzam led to the arrest of 692 individuals. Authorities also seized vehicles, generators, drilling equipment, raw gold mixtures and other tools used in illegal gold mining.
Separately, 15 additional suspects were arrested, with seizures including hunting weapons, 181,440 litres of fuel and 25 tonnes of tobacco.
Coastal operations prevented attempts at irregular migration, rescuing 137 people aboard makeshift boats, while 286 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were apprehended nationwide, the statement added.
