Mustapha Zebdi: State Measures on Eid Sheep Distribution Are Positive and Promote Fairness, Says Consumer Protection Chief

Mustapha Zebdi, head of the National Organization for Consumer Protection and Guidance, has described recent government measures to regulate Eid al-Adha livestock purchases as positive steps aimed at easing pressure on households and improving fairness amid shrinking domestic supply and rising prices.
Speaking to local media, Zebdi said the digital registration system for purchasing Eid sheep is functioning “smoothly and in an organised manner,” adding that it strengthens equality and equitable access among citizens.
He noted, however, that public concerns remain over past disparities in livestock weight despite uniform pricing, issues that have prompted multiple complaints to the organisation.
Zebdi said the body had previously written to the Ministry of Religious Affairs seeking clarification on the religious permissibility of selling livestock by weight, but had yet to receive a response.
He added that, if adopted by the authorities, a weight-based pricing mechanism linked to QR-coded registration could enhance fairness among buyers. The proposal, he stressed, remains under consideration by the relevant distribution authorities.
