Boutbig Says Election as Pan-African Parliament Chief Reflects “Unified African Will”
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algerian politician Fateh Boutbig said his election as president of the Pan-African Parliament reflects a “unified African will”, pledging to strengthen the body’s role and bring it closer to citizens across the continent.
Boutbig secured the post after winning 19 votes in the North Africa regional ballot, consolidating his path to the presidency during an extraordinary session in Midrand, South Africa, for the 2026–2029 legislative term.
He committed to reinforcing the parliament’s voice within Africa’s institutional architecture and enhancing its effectiveness.
Highlighting North Africa’s strategic weight, he described the region as a bridge linking Africa to its Mediterranean and global environment, pointing to Algeria’s capacity in energy, security and diplomacy as a potential driver of continental integration.
Boutbig also underlined Algeria’s role, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in supporting African causes, promoting peace and advancing economic integration, framing it as part of a longstanding commitment to unity and self-determination.
A member of Algeria’s Council of the Nation under the presidential quota, Boutbig has led the Front El Moustakbal since January 2024, succeeding Abdelaziz Belaïd. A former MP and head of the party’s parliamentary group, he has advocated political dialogue and initiatives aimed at strengthening domestic cohesion.
