President Tebboune Reaffirms Social State and Labour-Centred Growth in May Day Address
BY Dr. Hana Saada
On the eve of International Workers’ Day, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to a labour-driven growth model, outlining a series of economic and social measures aimed at strengthening purchasing power and sustaining the country’s social state.
In a message marking the occasion, President Tebboune said the government has prioritised human capital as the central engine of economic activity, supported by structural projects across key sectors including energy, mining, water and agriculture, alongside initiatives to foster entrepreneurship and emerging institutions.
He highlighted the delivery of major projects despite a volatile global environment, citing flagship developments such as the western mining railway, the integrated phosphate project, the Oued Amizour zinc and lead project, and large-scale seawater desalination plants—efforts he described as evidence of Algeria’s capacity to compete in a demanding economic landscape.
Reiterating the state’s social commitments, the president pointed to successive wage increases, the revaluation of pensions and retirement benefits, and the introduction of unemployment allowances for first-time jobseekers. He said these measures have begun to yield tangible improvements in living standards, positioning Algeria among countries with broad social coverage.
President Tebboune stressed that social transfers, subsidies for essential goods and housing support will remain central to public policy, while warning against speculative practices that distort markets. He called on the government to enforce regulatory mechanisms rigorously to curb unjustified price increases, artificial shortages and market manipulation.
He concluded by paying tribute to historic labour figures, including Aissat Idir and Abdelhak Benhamouda, and to workers who resisted colonial rule and later confronted terrorism, underscoring the enduring role of labour in shaping the nation’s trajectory
