Algerian Government Advances Cancer Strategy and Tightens Public Procurement Framework

Algeria’s government has moved to strengthen both public health planning and fiscal governance, approving key elements of a national cancer strategy while finalising new rules governing public procurement.
At a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, ministers concluded the review of a draft executive decree setting out the operational framework for public contracts, a measure aimed at improving the management of public funds and reinforcing transparency, equal access and fair competition in state procurement.
The government also examined a national strategy for cancer prevention and control through 2035, ahead of its submission to the Council of Ministers. Prepared by the national commission on cancer under presidential authority, the plan draws on recommendations from national consultations held in May 2025.
The strategy outlines operational tools to strengthen prevention and patient care, supported by a performance dashboard designed to track progress, assess system gaps and guide policy adjustments in oncology services.
Ministers further reviewed a report on overseas medical transfers, highlighting progress in reducing reliance on treatment abroad as domestic healthcare capacity expands. Officials pointed to improved national care provision, tighter cost control and a broader shift toward medical self-sufficiency as evidence of a more resilient health system.
