At just 19, Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour has amassed 30 medals over the past three years across Olympic, world, and African competitions, establishing herself as one of the most decorated athletes in her discipline and setting a new benchmark for Algerian, Arab, and African gymnastics.

Before Nemour joined the national team, podium finishes at the World Championships were considered beyond reach for Algerian gymnastics. Her arrival has sharply shifted expectations, elevating the country’s competitive profile on the global stage.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Nemour delivered a breakthrough performance on the uneven bars, overcoming a difficult injury period to claim Olympic gold. The victory marked a historic first for an African and Arab gymnast, placing her at the top of the podium and cementing a defining moment in Algeria’s Olympic history.

Her Olympic success was followed by sustained international results, including three medals at World Championships (one gold and two silver) and 13 medals in World Cup events, nine of them gold. She also secured five medals in Challenger Cup competitions, further consolidating her dominance on the circuit.

On the continental stage, Nemour led Algeria’s campaign at the African Championships in Yaoundé, where she contributed five gold medals and helped the national team surpass Egypt in the overall standings. Beyond her individual achievements, she played a stabilising role within the squad, offering experience and support to younger teammates, including recently naturalised athletes.

Now regarded as a central figure in Algerian gymnastics, Nemour’s trajectory has repositioned expectations for the sport nationally and regionally, as she continues to consolidate her status among the sport’s leading international names.
