Frater-Razes, Sanofi Launch Local Next-Generation Insulin Production in Algeria, Advancing Health Sovereignty
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Frater-Razes Laboratories and Sanofi Algeria have announced a strategic partnership to produce next-generation insulin locally, positioning the initiative as a milestone in Algeria’s drive toward health sovereignty and strengthened pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.
The project addresses a significant public health burden, with more than four million diabetes patients in Algeria and a rising prevalence rate, according to figures cited in the statement. The partners said the initiative aims to secure sustained access to innovative insulin therapies manufactured domestically.
Following several months of preparation, investment and in-depth technology transfer, the partnership will enable production of next-generation insulin in Algerian facilities compliant with international pharmaceutical standards.
The companies said the collaboration is anchored in shared principles of scientific rigour, innovation and patient responsibility, and aligned with national health priorities and Algeria’s 2030 vision. Both sides emphasised that patient access and industrial development are “inseparable objectives”.
“Algeria is no longer waiting: it is innovating, producing and treating its citizens with its own capabilities,” said Dr. Abdelhamid Cherfaoui, CEO of Frater-Razes Laboratories, adding that local industry is now capable of addressing complex health challenges.
Sanofi Algeria Managing Director Serge Montero said local production, closer to patients, would improve treatment access and long-term availability, describing the partnership as part of a sustained contribution to strengthening the national healthcare system.
The industrial setup relies on Algerian production units equipped with advanced technologies and operated by highly qualified local staff. It includes a Frater-Razes manufacturing site compliant with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, alongside full technology transfer supervised by Sanofi experts in insulin development.
The agreement also provides for patented therapeutic innovation developed over years of research, expanded employment opportunities in biopharmaceuticals, and improved supply security and continuity for insulin distribution.
Beyond insulin, the partnership opens the door to broader production of strategic medicines, laying the groundwork for long-term industrial cooperation based on sustained technology transfer.
Frater-Razes Laboratories, a major Algerian pharmaceutical actor with over 30 years of experience, said it continues to develop and manufacture treatments combining scientific rigor and innovation, with products distributed across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Sanofi Algeria, operating under Algerian law for nearly three decades, employs around 600 staff and said it remains committed to improving patient outcomes through partnerships in healthcare delivery, prevention, research support, medical training and industrial integration. The company supplies treatments across more than 100 therapeutic areas, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, immunology, vaccines, oncology and rare diseases.
