The Speaker of Algeria’s Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, held talks in Algiers on Tuesday with Spain’s Ambassador Ramiro Fernández Bachiller, focusing on strengthening cooperation in energy and economic sectors, according to a statement from the upper house.
Nasri underlined the historical and geographic ties between the two Mediterranean neighbours and pointed to renewed momentum in bilateral relations. He recalled President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to reactivate the 2002 Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourhood and Cooperation, describing it as a step towards a more balanced and trust-based partnership.
He reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation and said ties with Spain could be expanded across political, economic and parliamentary fields, calling for practical follow-through in energy, investment and technology transfer within a supportive legal and institutional framework.
The Spanish ambassador expressed Madrid’s appreciation of Algeria’s role as a key Mediterranean partner and said Spain was keen to deepen cooperation in energy, industry and renewable energy.
Both sides stressed the need to revitalise parliamentary ties, including reactivating a 2015 memorandum of understanding between the Council of the Nation and the Spanish Senate and strengthening friendship groups to enhance dialogue and coordination.
