Algeria’s Amar Bendjama Elected President of UN Economic and Social Council for 2027
Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York was unanimously elected to lead ECOSOC, marking another high-profile diplomatic appointment for Algiers following his international recognition for multilateral diplomacy in 2025.

NEW YORK — Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, was unanimously elected on Thursday by UN member states as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027 session.
The appointment places the Algerian diplomat at the head of one of the United Nations’ principal organs responsible for coordinating international cooperation on economic, social and sustainable development issues.
Bendjama’s election follows a series of prominent diplomatic milestones. In December 2025, the independent US-based publication PassBlue, which covers United Nations affairs, named him both “UN Person of the Year 2025” and “Diplomat of the Year 2025” following a vote by its readers and UN observers.
According to PassBlue, the awards recognised Bendjama’s diplomatic engagement on major international crises, particularly his efforts to draw attention to humanitarian and political challenges in the Middle East.
Throughout Algeria’s current tenure on the UN Security Council, Bendjama has become one of the country’s most prominent diplomatic voices, consistently advocating positions rooted in international law, including support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
His interventions have also reaffirmed Algeria’s longstanding diplomatic principles, including respect for state sovereignty, support for peoples’ right to self-determination, opposition to double standards in the application of international law and the promotion of an effective multilateral system.
His election to the presidency of ECOSOC further strengthens Algeria’s diplomatic profile within the United Nations as the country continues to play an active role in multilateral diplomacy and global governance.
