Algeria’s Parents’ Union Welcomes School Calendar Change, Citing Heat and Student Welfare
The National Union of Parents of Students (UNPE) welcomed the decision to modify the 2026-2027 school calendar, saying the measure takes into account regional climate conditions and prioritizes students’ health, safety and learning environment.

ALGIERS — The National Union of Parents of Students (UNPE) on Saturday welcomed the decision to modify the calendar for the 2026-2027 academic year, saying the measure takes into account the climatic conditions affecting several regions of Algeria.
In a statement issued Saturday evening, the organization praised the decision by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, particularly in light of the high temperatures recorded during certain periods in several provinces in the country’s interior and southern regions.
The UNPE said the decision reflects the authorities’ commitment to placing students’ interests, health and safety at the centre of education policy, while ensuring more suitable schooling conditions conducive to concentration, learning and improved academic performance.
The organization also stressed the importance of taking Algeria’s diverse climatic and geographical conditions into account when setting the start of the school year, given the significant differences in temperatures and weather patterns between the country’s provinces.
Such regional variations can directly affect students and educational staff, as well as the conditions in which teaching and learning take place, the union said.
The UNPE reaffirmed its readiness to continue contributing as an active partner to initiatives aimed at improving students’ schooling conditions and enhancing the quality of education.
It also reiterated its support for decisions and measures that place students’ interests first, protect their health and provide them with a safe, comfortable and learning-friendly school environment.
