Tijaniyya Leader Commemorates Founder’s Birth in Nigeria as Ambassadors and Thousands of Followers Gather in Kano
Sidi Ali Belarabi El-Tidjani, General Khalifa of the Tijaniyya Sufi order, presided over a major ceremony in Kano marking the birth of Sheikh Ahmed Tijani, bringing together Nigerian religious leaders, diplomats and thousands of followers while highlighting messages of peace, tolerance and solidarity with Palestine.

KANO, Nigeria — Sidi Ali Belarabi El-Tidjani, General Khalifa of the Tijaniyya Sufi order, presided in Kano over a major ceremony commemorating the birth of the order’s founder, Sheikh Ahmed Tijani, drawing tens of thousands of followers from across Nigeria.
The ceremony was attended by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, alongside prominent figures from the Tijaniyya tradition, including Sheikh Ibrahim Bauchi, grandson of the scholar Sheikh Tahir Usman Bauchi; Sheikh Muhammad Niass, Khalifa of the Fayda Tijaniyya; and Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hafiz of Egypt.
The gathering also brought together members of the diplomatic corps, led by Algeria’s ambassador to Nigeria, as well as the ambassadors of Palestine, Libya, Egypt and Senegal. Delegations from India and Pakistan also attended the event.
A message of peace and solidarity with Palestine
Religious and spiritual leaders addressing the gathering emphasized the Tijaniyya’s longstanding message of peace, security, fraternity and tolerance across Africa, highlighting its role in promoting an interpretation of Islam centred on dialogue and wisdom.
The Palestinian ambassador received a particularly warm welcome. In his address, he recalled the Tijaniyya’s continued support for the Palestinian cause, stressing the significance of Palestine and Al-Aqsa Mosque as a sacred trust for Muslims.
A representative of the Nigerian president thanked the organizing committee and welcomed the General Khalifa and his delegation, noting the importance of spiritual gatherings rooted in wisdom and prayer at a time when, he said, Nigeria greatly needed such occasions.
Khalifa calls for peace and social cohesion
Closing the ceremony, Sidi Ali Belarabi El-Tidjani reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the values inherited from his ancestor, the founder of the order.
He called for the preservation of civil peace, rejection of violence and prevention of discord, while urging members of society to uphold mutual compassion and solidarity. He also called on the faithful to remain committed to their faith and country.
The ceremony brought together tens of thousands of Tijaniyya followers from across Nigeria, underscoring the order’s extensive spiritual presence in the country and its wider role in Nigeria’s religious and social landscape.
