New Scandal Rocks Tangier Med Port: Massive Hashish Shipment Exposes Makhzen Networks’ Role in Drug Trafficking to Europe

The seizure of 350 kilograms of hashish concealed inside a Moroccan truck bound for Europe has once again put Tangier Med at the centre of scrutiny, exposing the entrenched trafficking networks operating through Morocco’s ports and border infrastructure.

TANGIER — A new drug-trafficking scandal has rocked Tangier Med port after Moroccan authorities seized a massive shipment of 350 kilograms of hashish concealed inside an international transport truck bound for European ports.

The operation once again sheds light on the expanding activity of trafficking gangs and networks exploiting Morocco’s infrastructure to channel drugs toward the European side of the Mediterranean. The seizure, according to a media source, further exposes the role of Moroccan ports and border crossings as key logistical routes for the cross-border flow of cannabis resin and hashish.

A sophisticated concealment operation

The Moroccan-registered truck was subjected to inspection at Tangier Med, where authorities discovered the large quantity of hashish tightly packaged and concealed inside the truck’s trailer, apparently in an attempt to evade border-control and inspection systems before crossing into Europe.

The operation resulted in the arrest of the 42-year-old Moroccan driver, who was referred for questioning.

Judicial authorities have also opened investigations into the national and international reach of the network involved, reinforcing the indications that the shipment was not simply the work of an isolated individual but part of an organized cross-border trafficking operation.

Tangier Med: Development hub or gateway for drug trafficking?

The latest scandal again puts the spotlight on Tangier Med, officially promoted as a major development and logistics hub, while its port infrastructure and associated border crossings have been exposed as routes exploited by trafficking networks moving drugs toward Europe.

The recurring exploitation of this maritime artery, according to the source, raises serious questions about logistical facilitation and internal complicity, particularly given the size of the shipments and the sophisticated methods used to conceal them.

The source further argues that the continued flow of Moroccan cannabis resin toward Europe reflects the Makhzen’s reliance on the drug trade as a source of shadow-economy revenues and liquidity, despite the security and social consequences for neighbouring countries and Europe’s northern Mediterranean shore.

Growing pressure on Rabat

The repeated seizures are also presented as a growing embarrassment for Morocco’s security strategy and its European partners. The continued discovery of large drug shipments at major Moroccan gateways undermines Rabat’s public narrative on combating drug trafficking and raises questions about the effectiveness of its declared measures.

The seizure of 350 kilograms of hashish at Tangier Med, a major international transit point, places renewed pressure on Rabat at a time when European security and judicial authorities are confronting the continued flow of Moroccan-origin cannabis resin into European markets, with the proceeds feeding organized crime and money-laundering networks.

The Tangier Med seizure therefore adds to a growing record of drug-trafficking cases that expose the depth of the structural problem within Morocco’s border and port infrastructure and raise further questions over the relationship between trafficking networks and the Makhzen system.
