Algiers Expands Urban Transit Capacity with 102 New Buses Delivered to ETUSA
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers’ public transport network has received a further capacity boost with the delivery of 102 new buses to the Public Company for Urban and Suburban Transport of Algiers (ETUSA), as part of a broader state-led effort to modernise the country’s ageing fleet and enhance service provision.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior, Local Assemblies and Regional Planning, the delivery forms part of a larger batch of 320 vehicles supplied by the Rouiba-based Automotive Industry Development Establishment, an entity operating under the Directorate of Military Industries. The acquisition reflects an increasingly structured approach to integrating domestic industrial capacity into public service infrastructure.
The rollout is aligned with directives issued by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at renewing the national fleet through the acquisition of 10,000 buses. Overseen by the Ministry of the Interior, the programme is framed as a strategic intervention designed to improve the quality, reliability, and safety of urban transport services, while addressing persistent capacity constraints across major urban centres.
The newly delivered units comprise 32 high-capacity buses accommodating up to 100 passengers, alongside 70 mid-sized vehicles with 37 seats. This calibrated mix suggests a targeted response to varying demand profiles across the capital’s transport corridors.
Beyond the immediate operational gains, the initiative signals a broader policy orientation towards the modernisation of public transport systems through coordinated state investment and industrial mobilisation. Deliveries are expected to continue across multiple wilayas, pointing to an incremental but sustained effort to standardise service quality nationwide and reinforce the role of public transport as a cornerstone of urban mobility policy.
