Security Convergence, Institutional Modernisation: Algeria, Germany Deepen Police Cooperation Amid Evolving Transnational Challenges

The Director General of National Security, Ali Badaoui, received the Head of the Federal Police of Germany, Dieter Romann, in Algiers on Thursday, as part of an official visit undertaken by a senior German police delegation aimed at reinforcing bilateral cooperation frameworks in the field of internal security.
The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Directorate General of National Security, formed part of a broader institutional effort to deepen and modernise channels of cooperation between Algerian and German security structures. It comes against a backdrop of increasingly complex transnational security dynamics requiring enhanced operational coordination and information exchange between partner states.
Initial discussions were conducted in a bilateral format between the two senior officials before being expanded to include their respective delegations. Exchanges focused on avenues for strengthening and updating joint mechanisms of police cooperation, with particular emphasis on border management systems, the prevention and combating of irregular migration, as well as the organisation and security of major public events.
Both sides also underscored the importance of improving coordination on issues of shared concern, in line with evolving regional and international security challenges. The dialogue reflected a mutual recognition of the need for adaptive security frameworks capable of responding to emerging threats, particularly those linked to mobility, cross-border flows, and large-scale public order management.
In a subsequent phase of the visit, the German delegation proceeded to the headquarters of the Border Police Directorate, where it received a detailed briefing on its core missions. This included an overview of its operational mandate in managing the movement of individuals and vehicles across national borders, as well as the technical and organisational functions of its various services.
The visit forms part of a sustained trajectory of engagement between Algeria and Germany in the security domain, reflecting a shared interest in reinforcing institutional cooperation, enhancing operational interoperability, and consolidating joint responses to contemporary security challenges at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
