Arab Parliamentarians Mark Palestinian Prisoner Day, Speaker Boughali Condemns Zionist Policies

By Dr. Hana Saada

Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly and President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, has reaffirmed unwavering support for Palestinian prisoners on the eve of Palestinian Prisoner Day, observed annually on 17 April.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Union, Boughali denounced the practices of the Zionist entity against Palestinian detainees, describing them as grave violations that demand urgent international attention. He framed the occasion not merely as symbolic, but as a renewed call to confront what he portrayed as systematic injustice inflicted upon thousands of prisoners.

According to figures cited in the statement, more than 9,500 Palestinian detainees—including women, children, the elderly and the sick—are subjected to severe conditions marked by physical and psychological abuse, deliberate medical neglect, and the deprivation of fundamental rights. Boughali stressed that these detainees are being punished for their attachment to their land and their refusal of occupation.

He further condemned legislative measures adopted by the Zionist entity concerning Palestinian prisoners, describing them as reflective of an entrenched system of racial discrimination and policies comparable to apartheid. Such measures, he argued, transform detention facilities into spaces of systemic abuse, in violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union called on the international community, parliaments and human rights organisations to take concrete action, including condemning the legislation, pursuing accountability through international legal mechanisms, and exerting pressure for its repeal. It also urged the immediate and unconditional release of all Palestinian detainees, particularly vulnerable groups, and called for independent international investigations into alleged abuses, including torture and other violations.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the centrality of the prisoners’ issue within the broader Arab political landscape, presenting it as an enduring cause tied to justice, dignity and the broader quest for a political resolution.
