ALGIERS — Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs Ahmed Attaf held talks on Thursday with Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov, who is on an official visit to Algeria, as both sides explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding interregional partnerships.

The discussions began with a one-on-one meeting between the two ministers, followed by an expanded working session involving members of both delegations, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The talks focused on reviewing the current state of Algerian-Uzbek relations and assessing opportunities to elevate bilateral cooperation in line with the shared interests of the two countries. Both ministers stressed the importance of injecting new momentum into the partnership through the establishment of institutional mechanisms capable of structuring and sustaining cooperation.

In this context, Attaf and Saidov highlighted the proposed creation of a joint commission and a business council aimed at facilitating economic exchanges and promoting investment. They also identified a number of priority sectors for future cooperation, including mining, energy, agriculture, trade and culture, while emphasizing the need to strengthen the legal framework governing bilateral relations.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two ministers exchanged views on a range of regional and international developments of mutual concern. The discussions acquired additional significance as Uzbekistan prepares to assume the presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement in January, a development that both sides viewed as an opportunity to reinforce coordination within multilateral forums.

The meeting also addressed prospects for enhancing cooperation between Africa and Central Asia, reflecting a shared interest in fostering stronger political and economic linkages between the two regions.

The visit concluded with the signing of an agreement providing for visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports, alongside a memorandum of understanding between Algeria’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (IDRI) and Uzbekistan’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), aimed at strengthening academic and diplomatic cooperation.
