Chanegriha Says Algeria Has Become ‘An Impregnable Fortress’ Through Counterterrorism Efforts
Army chief says the legacy of the War of Independence continues to inspire new generations, highlighting the armed forces’ role in defeating terrorism, strengthening national security and supporting regional stability during a graduation ceremony at the Cherchell Military Academy.

CHERCHELL, Algeria — Algeria’s Army Chief General Saïd Chanegriha said on Thursday that the country had become “an impregnable fortress” against its adversaries, attributing its resilience to decades of efforts to combat terrorism, safeguard state institutions and strengthen the operational capabilities of the People’s National Army (ANP).
Speaking during the graduation ceremony of new officer classes at the Cherchell Military Academy, presided over by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Chanegriha said the spirit of Algeria’s War of Independence and the legacy of the November Revolution continue to serve as a source of inspiration for post-independence generations.
Opening his address, the army chief welcomed President Tebboune and invited guests, describing the president’s attendance as a reflection of the state’s continued commitment to military education, leadership development and the modernisation of Algeria’s armed forces.
Chanegriha noted that this year’s graduation coincides with celebrations marking the 64th anniversary of Independence and National Sovereignty Day, as well as Youth Day, describing the occasion as an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of the country’s independence martyrs and reaffirm the values of patriotism and national unity.
He said members of the People’s National Army, under the leadership of President Tebboune in his capacity as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence, continue the mission of their predecessors in safeguarding Algeria’s sovereignty and republican institutions.
The army chief also highlighted Algeria’s campaign against terrorism, saying the armed forces had made considerable sacrifices to defeat extremist groups, dismantle their organisational structures and prevent what he described as attempts to undermine the foundations of the Algerian state.
He added that the mobilisation of the armed forces, together with patriotic elements of Algerian society, had enabled the country to overcome the terrorist threat while providing its defence and security institutions with extensive operational experience in counterterrorism and the fight against violent extremism.
