Djamaâ El-Djazaïr Honours Senegal’s Fayda Tidjania Leader Amid Push for African Spiritual Dialogue

Djamaâ El-Djazaïr on Thursday honoured the Khalife General of Senegal’s Fayda Tidjania, Cheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass, during an official ceremony underscoring Algeria’s long-standing religious and cultural ties with sub-Saharan Africa.

The event, chaired by Djamaâ El-Djazaïr rector Cheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi El Hassani, brought together government members, presidential advisers, accredited diplomats, and senior religious figures alongside representatives of national institutions.

In his address, El Hassani described the Senegalese spiritual leader as a figure of “knowledge and foresight” aware of Algeria’s historical role in promoting Islamic scholarship and the Arabic language across the African continent. He said the tribute reflected Algeria’s commitment to spiritual continuity, Islamic unity and its historic links with Africa, while highlighting the role of Sufi brotherhoods in reinforcing transnational religious and cultural networks.

Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, the largest mosque in Africa and the third largest in the world after the Grand Mosques of Mecca and Medina, has in recent years emerged as a central institution in Algeria’s religious architecture, combining worship, higher Islamic scholarship and cultural outreach. Beyond its scale and symbolic visibility in Algiers, the complex functions as a reference centre for religious guidance, intellectual exchange and the promotion of a national religious doctrine grounded in moderation, balanced interpretation and institutionalised dialogue.

Within this framework, the mosque has also been positioned as a platform for inter-African religious engagement, hosting figures from across the continent and reinforcing Algeria’s approach to religious diplomacy, particularly through Sufi networks historically linked to the Tidjania order.

In remarks delivered on his behalf, Cheikh Niass expressed gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Algerian authorities for the reception accorded to his delegation, describing Djamaâ El-Djazaïr as a unique spiritual, scientific and civilisational landmark reflecting Algeria’s vision of the role of religion and knowledge in society.
