Algeria’s Council of the Nation took part on Friday in the meeting of the Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs, Social Affairs and Education of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), held in Istanbul, where Algerian representatives stressed the role of economic integration in promoting regional stability and sustainable development.

The Algerian delegation included Senator Ghanem Fakhreddine Abderraouf, deputy head of the parliamentary group of the National Democratic Rally (RND), and Senator Bilal Khalfallah.

During discussions, the Algerian representatives said economic cooperation across the Mediterranean remained a key instrument for strengthening peace and reducing tensions, while helping southern countries address challenges including unemployment, poverty and irregular migration through investment, job creation and infrastructure development.

They also called for stronger Mediterranean integration through expanded investment in education, technology and renewable energy, alongside deeper cultural dialogue and broader involvement of civil society and the private sector.

The senators reiterated that Algeria’s foreign policy continued to be guided by dialogue, respect for state sovereignty and peaceful conflict resolution, noting Algeria’s participation in regional initiatives including the Union for the Mediterranean and the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

On the sidelines of the meeting, members of the Algerian delegation also held bilateral talks with the Jordanian parliamentary delegation, during which both sides underlined the depth of historical ties between the two countries and stressed the importance of strengthening parliamentary cooperation in line with broader political relations.

In a symbolic gesture that drew attention during the session, Senator Ghanem Fakhreddine Abderraouf invited participating delegations to sample premium Algerian dates, in what participants described as an example of “date diplomacy” aimed at promoting Algeria’s agricultural products and supporting the country’s broader economic outreach efforts.

In his intervention, the senator stressed that sustainable regional stability could only be achieved through balanced economic cooperation and by addressing youth unemployment through investment in education, technology and renewable energy.

He also reaffirmed Algeria’s role as a “stabilising force” in the Mediterranean and Sahel regions, reflecting President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s foreign policy approach based on good neighbourliness, peaceful solutions and counterterrorism cooperation.

The senator further highlighted Algeria’s strategic position as a major energy supplier to Europe through natural gas exports, while presenting the country’s economic vision for 2035 centred on building “genuine partnerships” capable of ensuring sustainable growth and shared prosperity across the Mediterranean region.
