The Rector of Djamaa El Djazaïr, Cheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, received on Friday the Khalife General of Senegal’s Fayda Tidjania, Cheikh Mohamed El Mahi Ibrahim Niass, along with the accompanying delegation, according to a statement issued by the institution.

The meeting, held in the presence of the Khalife General of the Tidjania order, Cheikh Sidi Ali Belarabi, followed an official ceremony organised the previous day in honour of the visiting Senegalese religious leader, the same source added.

During the discussions, the rector highlighted the spiritual depth of the visit and emphasised the historic continuity of ties rooted in the legacy of early Islamic scholars, while underscoring the symbolic significance of Djamaa El Djazaïr in Algiers.

He described the mosque as a major Islamic landmark located in Mohammadia, reflecting Algeria’s religious heritage and its long-standing role in preserving Islamic identity and values across generations.

Djamaa El Djazaïr, the largest Islamic complexes in Africa, has increasingly established itself as a multidimensional institution combining worship, religious education, scientific research and cultural dialogue. Beyond its architectural scale, it functions as a reference centre for Islamic scholarship and a platform for promoting moderation, religious tolerance and intellectual exchange.

Designed as a space for both spiritual guidance and academic engagement, the mosque hosts religious seminars, cultural forums and international encounters aimed at reinforcing dialogue between Muslim communities, particularly across Africa and the Arab world. It is also widely regarded as part of Algeria’s broader approach to promoting a national religious reference grounded in balance, openness and rejection of extremism.

For his part, Cheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass expressed his appreciation for the visit, describing Djamaa El Djazaïr as a landmark of Islamic civilisation and a source of pride for Muslims. He praised its role in promoting moderation and safeguarding societies from extremist ideologies, while reinforcing values of unity and coexistence.

At the end of the visit, the delegation toured the prayer hall and received detailed explanations on the mosque’s facilities, as well as its religious, scientific and cultural missions.
