Fateh Boutbig: “The Pan-African Parliament Must Carry the Voice of the Peoples”

BY Dr. Hana Saada

On the occasion of World Africa Day, the Memory Forum of the daily El Moudjahid hosted, on Sunday, Fateh Boutbig, recently elected President of the Pan-African Parliament.

During the meeting, dedicated to the role of African institutions in addressing the continent’s current challenges, Boutbig stressed that “the African Parliament, like other parliaments around the world, is tasked with elevating the voice of the peoples and representing their concerns,” adding that it must also “debate the major challenges facing humanity and the international community today.”

He underlined the need to strengthen coordination among African parliamentarians, stating: “We are determined to create an African platform bringing together all parliamentarians from the continent,” noting that these elected representatives “embody the will of African peoples.” According to him, parliamentarians must act “within an African consciousness and vigilance” to preserve “security, peace, dialogue and stability.”

Boutbig also warned against external influences on the continent, noting that “foreign policies sometimes find fertile ground in several African regions,” which, he said, partly explains “the security disturbances affecting certain countries.” He stressed that African peoples remain attached to the ideals of liberation movements, adding that there is a strong commitment to confronting current challenges “with the spirit of militants and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Africa.”

He described the Pan-African Parliament as “a strong platform” that must play a central political role by “building bridges of communication, strengthening African convictions and defending the interests of the continent,” while also supporting the implementation of international human rights conventions.

Boutbig acknowledged that the institution had gone through a difficult period marked by “dysfunctions and limited scope of action,” but affirmed that “the time for reforms has now begun.” He also highlighted Algeria’s role in Africa, describing it as “an influential and respected country on the continent,” crediting this position to “the wise policy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Algeria’s vision based on continental openness.”

He concluded by reaffirming his personal commitment to Africa, saying: “I will remain a committed activist faithful to Africa’s principles,” pledging to work “in a spirit of complementarity and cooperation in the service of the continent and Algeria.”
