Khatri Adouh: “Algeria Works for a Strong and United Africa”

BY Dr. Hana Saada

The Sahrawi ambassador to Algeria, Khatri Adouh, on Sunday welcomed the election of Fateh Boutbig as President of the Pan-African Parliament, describing it as “an honour for Algeria” and a reflection of “the country’s growing status on the international stage.”

Speaking at the Memory Forum of the daily El Moudjahid, Adouh said the result also reflects “the credibility of Algeria and its diplomacy in Africa,” noting the strong support Boutbig received from the North African group within the Pan-African Parliament.

He expressed confidence that the Pan-African Parliament would experience “a genuine renewal” under Boutbig’s leadership, based on both his vision and the need to overcome institutional difficulties that have affected the body in recent years. He added that the new leadership aims to restore the Parliament’s prestige and enhance its role within African Union structures, moving it towards a more effective role in shaping continental strategies and decision-making.

Adouh also highlighted Algeria’s leadership role in Africa across political, diplomatic, economic and commercial dimensions, stating that “Algeria works for a strong and united Africa,” capable of achieving greater integration and development.

He noted that despite its vast resources, Africa continues to face major challenges, pointing to “the last remaining colony in Africa,” in reference to the Sahrawi issue, and arguing that “certain forms of colonialism still persist on the continent.”

In this context, he called for African peoples to overcome “vestiges of colonial thinking” and for stronger mechanisms to resolve conflicts, while respecting post-independence borders and the right of peoples to self-determination.

Adouh concluded by urging African governments and parliamentary groups to support the new President of the Pan-African Parliament, stressing that collective backing is essential for the institution to fulfil its mission in serving the peoples of the continent.
