ALGIERS, July 9 — Algeria’s state-owned dairy group Giplait has inaugurated a spring water production and bottling plant in the northeastern province of El Tarf, marking a further step in the company’s strategy to diversify its product portfolio beyond dairy products while expanding domestic production capacity.
The facility, located in the municipality of Berrihane, officially entered service on Thursday during a ceremony attended by El Tarf Governor Mohamed Meziane and Giplait Chief Executive Samah Lahlouh.
The plant was transferred to Giplait as part of assets recovered by the Algerian state under final judicial rulings before undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme financed by the group.
Diversification strategy
Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration, Lahlouh said the project forms part of Giplait’s strategy to broaden its industrial activities and help meet growing domestic demand for bottled spring water.
She announced that the group plans to allocate 1 billion Algerian dinars ($7.4 million) in 2027 to expand the facility and increase its production capacity.
The investment reflects Giplait’s broader efforts to diversify revenue streams while strengthening national food and beverage production.
Production capacity
The industrial complex occupies two separate sites.
The first spans approximately eight hectares and includes a 100-metre artesian well with a production flow of 7.5 litres per second, supplying the spring water used in the bottling process.
The second, covering two hectares, houses the administrative headquarters and security facilities.
The production site also comprises a 3,000-square-metre bottling unit, a 4,000-square-metre storage warehouse for bottled water and an additional 3,880-square-metre logistics warehouse.
According to company officials, the plant has an initial production capacity of 120,000 bottles of 1.5-litre spring water per day and will employ 23 workers during its first phase of operations.
Modern production standards
Giplait said the facility has been equipped with modern production systems that comply with national quality and food safety standards, ensuring high-quality spring water production while meeting regulatory requirements governing bottling, storage and distribution.
The launch forms part of Algeria’s broader efforts to increase domestic manufacturing capacity by bringing recovered industrial assets back into operation and integrating them into the country’s public industrial base.
