ALGIERS, Algeria — Senior officials from several Algerian ministries held an interministerial coordination meeting to assess progress on the country’s flagship mining projects, notably the Gara Djebilet iron ore project and the integrated phosphate project, while emphasizing the need to accelerate the delivery of critical supporting infrastructure.
Hosted by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, the meeting brought together the secretaries-general of the ministries of Energy, Interior, Transport, Mines and Mining Industries, and Water Resources. The session was chaired by the ministry’s Secretary-General, Miloud Medjelled.
Discussions focused on the advancement of Algeria’s major mining projects and the accompanying infrastructure required to support future production and industrial operations.
Officials reviewed the development of the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine alongside the integrated phosphate project, paying particular attention to securing adequate water resources for industrial facilities and strengthening railway and logistics networks to ensure the efficient transportation of raw materials between mining sites, processing plants, industrial complexes and export ports.
The meeting also assessed measures aimed at meeting the water requirements of the preliminary processing unit at Gara Djebilet, the iron concentrate production project in Toumiat, Béchar Province, and the phosphate processing and value-added industrial complexes in Bled El Hadba (Tébessa Province) and Oued El Kebrit (Souk Ahras Province).
Participants stressed the importance of continuously expanding water supply capacity in line with the phased commissioning of these industrial facilities.
The officials further examined progress on mining transport infrastructure, particularly railway programs designed to increase the capacity for transporting iron ore and phosphate. These projects are intended to support the gradual increase in production, facilitate the movement of raw materials to domestic industrial facilities and export terminals, and contribute to the development of an integrated mining and industrial value chain.
The participating ministries agreed that the current phase requires closer intersectoral coordination and the rapid resolution of technical and administrative challenges to ensure that the projects become operational according to schedule.
They reaffirmed that the accelerated implementation of these strategic projects reflects President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to maximize the value of Algeria’s mineral resources, strengthen industrial integration and increase the mining sector’s contribution to economic diversification.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed to establish a permanent monitoring mechanism at the level of the ministries’ secretaries-general to regularly evaluate progress, maintain coordination among all stakeholders and expedite the completion of the supporting infrastructure required for the projects to enter service within the planned timeframe.
The Ministry of Energy said the initiative is expected to reinforce Algeria’s position as a regional mining and industrial hub while strengthening the country’s industrial sovereignty and long-term economic resilience.
