Libyan Water Minister Praises Algeria’s Seawater Desalination Model During Visit to Fouka 2 Plant

Libya’s Minister of Water Resources, Mohamed Hosni Oweidan, has hailed Algeria’s achievements in seawater desalination during a visit to the Fouka 2 desalination plant, expressing Tripoli’s interest in benefiting from Algerian expertise and expanding bilateral cooperation in water resource management.

ALGIERS, Algeria — Libya’s Minister of Water Resources, Mohamed Hosni Oweidan, praised Algeria’s progress in seawater desalination during an official visit to the Fouka 2 desalination plant in Tipaza Province, highlighting his country’s interest in drawing on Algeria’s experience to strengthen bilateral cooperation in water management.

According to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Water Resources, the Libyan minister was accompanied by the ministry’s Secretary-General, Omar Bouguerra, and Libya’s Ambassador to Algeria, Saleh Hamma Mohamed Bekda.

During the visit, the Libyan delegation received a comprehensive presentation on Algeria’s desalination program, covering the planning, construction and operation of seawater desalination plants, as well as the pivotal role played by Algerian expertise and national companies in implementing the country’s strategic water security projects.

Officials also outlined the objectives of Algeria’s second supplementary development program, which aims to further strengthen national water security by expanding desalination capacity and reinforcing the country’s water resources.

Oweidan commended the advanced level reached by Algeria in the field of seawater desalination, describing the country’s experience as a leading regional model.

He also expressed Libya’s desire to benefit from Algeria’s expertise and emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation and technical exchanges in desalination technologies and integrated water resource management.

The visit reflects growing cooperation between Algeria and Libya in strategic sectors, with water security emerging as a key area for regional collaboration in response to increasing climate and resource challenges.
