ALGIERS — Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Kamel Baddari on Wednesday chaired the first coordination meeting marking the launch of the implementation phase of Algeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, as authorities seek to strengthen technological sovereignty and accelerate the country’s digital transformation.

The meeting brought together representatives from several ministries and national institutions to define the strategy’s principal objectives and establish a common implementation roadmap aimed at expanding the use of artificial intelligence across public administration while drawing on international best practices.

According to the ministry, participants agreed on a series of strategic priorities designed to reinforce Algeria’s technological autonomy and support the development of a national artificial intelligence ecosystem.

Among the key priorities is the development of sovereign, open artificial intelligence models tailored to the operational needs of the Algerian state.

The roadmap also calls for strengthening the country’s high-performance computing capacity through the expansion of national computing centres, enabling research institutions and start-ups to develop and train artificial intelligence models domestically.

Another priority focuses on building national expertise through the launch of specialised and intensive training programmes in partnership with universities and research institutions, particularly in the fields of data analytics and generative artificial intelligence.

Participants further endorsed the creation of a National Artificial Intelligence Research Centre, alongside specialised research units, to facilitate the transfer of scientific research into industrial applications and innovation.

The strategy also emphasises securing the processing and storage of administrative and public-sector data within protected national data centres while ensuring that artificial intelligence technologies are deployed in an ethical, responsible and trustworthy manner.

The meeting concluded with the establishment of an interministerial monitoring committee tasked with overseeing implementation of the roadmap according to a defined timetable.

The committee will supervise progress toward accelerating the digital transformation of Algeria’s public administration while supporting the development of a governance model that is more modern, efficient and technology-driven.
