Launch of Algeria’s 25th National Zakat Fund Campaign Highlights Digital Transformation and Expanding Social Solidarity
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – Algeria’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Youcef Belmehdi, officially launched on Tuesday the 25th National Awareness Campaign for the Zakat Fund for the 1446 Hijri year, underscoring the growing role of digital technologies in modernising collection mechanisms, improving transparency, and strengthening social solidarity across the country.
Speaking during the launch ceremony in Algiers, Belmehdi described the initiative as a significant milestone in Algeria’s institutional approach to social support and community solidarity, stressing that the Zakat Fund continues to benefit from sustained state support aimed at ensuring its development, effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
The minister noted that public authorities regard zakat not only as a religious obligation but also as an important social and civilisational instrument capable of reinforcing national cohesion and supporting vulnerable segments of society.
Belmehdi further emphasised that this year’s campaign is being reinforced by the opportunities offered by digital transformation, which is increasingly being integrated into the collection, management, and distribution of zakat contributions. He said these efforts are aligned with Algeria’s broader national strategy to build a modern, efficient, and citizen-oriented public administration under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
According to the minister, digital platforms have become an essential tool for bringing public services closer to citizens, enhancing transparency, and broadening participation in solidarity-based initiatives. He also highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the ministry and Algérie Poste, which aims to simplify zakat-related transactions for both contributors and beneficiaries through improved administrative and payment procedures.
The minister revealed that the Zakat Fund recorded encouraging results during the first quarter of 2026, collecting approximately 100 billion centimes, a performance he said reflects growing public confidence in the fund as a national mechanism for social solidarity and redistribution.
For his part, M’hamed Bouziane, Director General of the National Office of Wakfs and Zakat, outlined the latest digital tools introduced to facilitate zakat payments. These include the recently launched “ZakatPay” application, designed to enable citizens to fulfil their zakat obligations electronically through a transparent and user-friendly process.
Bouziane also announced progress on the development of the Algerian Zakat Portal, a comprehensive national digital platform intended to integrate all stakeholders involved in zakat operations within a unified electronic ecosystem. The platform is expected to streamline administrative procedures, improve coordination, and enhance the efficiency of fund management and distribution.
He additionally welcomed the decision to exempt postal accounts dedicated to zakat operations from payment and transfer fees, a measure intended to facilitate transactions and maximise the value of contributions reaching beneficiaries.
The event, attended by representatives from several national institutions and organisations, featured presentations on the Zakat Fund’s activities and achievements, a review of the outcomes of the previous awareness campaign, and a live demonstration showcasing the use of digital tools for zakat payment and processing. The initiative reflects Algeria’s ongoing efforts to combine social solidarity mechanisms with technological innovation in order to enhance efficiency, accountability, and citizen engagement.
