Moroccan Left-Wing Parties Call for Expanded Freedoms and Independent Inquiry into Kelaa-Related Deaths
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Several Moroccan left-wing political parties have called for broader protections of public freedoms, the release of individuals they describe as political detainees, and an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding recent deaths in Kelaa, according to a joint statement issued by the groups.
The statement was released by the Democratic Left Federation, the Unified Socialist Party, and the Democratic Workers’ Way Party, which expressed concerns over what they described as a deterioration in public freedoms and increasing reliance on security-oriented approaches in addressing social and political protests.
The parties criticized the use of criminal law provisions in cases involving freedom of expression, political activism, and peaceful protest, arguing that such measures raise concerns regarding constitutional guarantees and Morocco’s international human rights commitments.
Calls for Independent Investigation
The three parties also called for an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into the deaths of several young people in Kelaa, seeking clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the incidents and accountability where appropriate.
The issue, they said, requires a comprehensive examination to establish facts and address public concerns.
Concerns Over Political and Civic Freedoms
Beyond the question of detentions, the parties expressed concerns about restrictions affecting human rights defenders, journalists, anti-corruption activists, and groups opposing normalization policies.
They also criticized reported restrictions on the Democratic Workers’ Way Party’s use of public venues for its national congress, describing the move as inconsistent with political rights and freedoms guaranteed under Moroccan law.
Demands for Institutional Reforms
The parties outlined a number of proposals aimed at strengthening democratic governance and public trust, including:
- The release of individuals detained in connection with political or opinion-related cases.
- A shift away from security and judicial approaches in addressing social and political demands.
- Expanded protections for public freedoms and judicial independence.
- Guarantees of fair trial standards and protection for critical voices and civil society actors.
The statement argued that strengthening the rule of law requires greater protection of civil liberties, transparency in public affairs, and broader political participation, while emphasizing the importance of dialogue in addressing social and political challenges.
