President Tebboune’s Messages from the Algiers International Fair: Industrialisation, Partnerships and Economic Sovereignty at the Forefront
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune used his visit to the 57th Algiers International Fair (FIA) to underscore Algeria’s commitment to industrial development, economic diversification, strategic partnerships and investment-led growth, while highlighting the progress achieved by national companies across a range of sectors.
During the official inauguration of the exhibition at the Exhibition Palace (SAFEX) in Pins Maritimes, Algiers, Tebboune toured several national and international pavilions, reviewing major projects, investments and industrial achievements that form part of Algeria’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on hydrocarbons and strengthen productive sectors of the economy.
One of the key stops during the presidential tour was the pavilion of the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of Railway Investments (ANESRIF), where officials presented an overview of major railway projects completed or under development across the country. The projects were showcased as critical infrastructure designed to connect mining, industrial and commercial hubs throughout Algeria while supporting regional development and reducing geographic disparities.
Tebboune stressed the strategic importance of rail transport in facilitating economic activity, describing the sector as a catalyst capable of supporting growth across multiple industries while improving connectivity between different regions of the country.
The president also visited the pavilion of tyre manufacturer Iris, reflecting official support for private-sector industrial development and reaffirming the authorities’ commitment to treating public and private enterprises as complementary actors in national economic development.
At the pavilion of Air Algérie, Tebboune received briefings on the national carrier’s investment and expansion strategy, while also reviewing development plans aimed at strengthening the airline’s operational capabilities.
His tour further included a visit to the pavilion of Bellat, a company expanding its investments in poultry production, as well as the pavilion of the SIM Group, one of Algeria’s leading food industry operators. Officials presented the group’s ongoing investment programmes and highlighted the growing contribution of its products to domestic food supply.
The president began his visit at the Spanish pavilion, with Spain serving as guest of honour at this year’s edition of the fair. The participation was presented as a reflection of improving Algerian-Spanish relations and growing prospects for bilateral cooperation in several strategic sectors.
Tebboune also toured the pavilion of the Sultanate of Oman, where he encouraged Omani companies to participate in Algeria’s investment programmes and economic development initiatives. He reiterated Algeria’s openness to foreign investment and highlighted the positive momentum in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The president subsequently visited the Tunisian pavilion, which featured companies seeking to expand partnerships with Algerian businesses, before touring the Palestinian pavilion. There, he received presentations on Palestinian products and reiterated Algeria’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause, stressing that Palestinian cultural, artistic and productive activities continue to endure despite the destruction caused by the ongoing conflict.
During his visit to the Chadian pavilion, Tebboune emphasised Algeria’s commitment to supporting Chad through cooperation projects spanning hydrocarbons exploration, refining, electricity infrastructure and cement production. He described these initiatives as part of broader efforts to strengthen economic integration and investment cooperation between the two countries.
The president also visited the Ministry of National Defence pavilion, where he reviewed the latest developments in Algeria’s military-industrial sector. Officials presented a range of domestically produced equipment, technologies and industrial capabilities developed by institutions affiliated with the National People’s Army.
Tebboune praised the progress achieved in national defence manufacturing, highlighting the growing capacity of Algeria’s military-industrial base and stressing the importance of expanding local production. He noted that advances in domestic manufacturing should significantly reduce reliance on imported spare parts, limiting external procurement to highly specialised components requiring advanced technologies not yet available locally.
The president’s tour reflected Algeria’s broader economic priorities, including industrial expansion, infrastructure development, technological advancement, strategic international partnerships and the strengthening of domestic production capacities as part of efforts to build a more diversified and resilient economy.
